The Government Accountability Project (GAP) and Boston Chemical Data Corporation
issued a study that includes the first reports of plutonium in clams and fish in the

Until the 1840's, tooth decay was corrected for the rich with gold fillings. The poor went
without. The discovery, by a British chemist in 1819, that shavings from silver coins
mixed with mercury made a pliable mass which soon hardened was the origin of mercury
amalgam, or "silver", fillings for dental caries (cavitations in decaying
teeth). It is the convenience of use of this material which has made it popular with
dentists and parsimonious patients alike. It is only the liquid metal mercury which has
the property of forming hard substances when mixed with other metals; this is the amalgam.
Until recently most dentists parrot what they were taught in school and what the American
Dental Association (ADA) had to say about mercury staying "locked in chemically"
within the filling. Recently, however, extensive evidence has accumulated that the mercury
leaches out of the amalgams, poisoning us. Before entering into a detailed account of the
evidence, it is interesting to review the dental politics surrounding the introduction of
mercury in America. It was in the early 1800's that two brothers came from France,
bringing a new material, the precursors of the current silver amalgams. In addition to
mercury, it contained silver, copper and zinc. Many American dentists of the time believed
this material to be toxic. This argument is known as the first amalgam war. Members of the
then established dental organization, the American Society of Dental Surgeons (ASDS)
required their members to sign pledges promising not to use mercury in the fillings of
teeth.13 Several members were suspended from the society in New York City as late as 1848
for malpractice for using silver mercury fillings. As you will read further on in this
newsletter, the exact opposite situation exists today. The 'mercury amalgam dentists'
organized the then new American Dental Association (ADA) and won the amalgam war. They
have ruled (and this is probably the correct term) ever since. Note that in 1984 an
organization called The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology [IAOMT14]
was formed) rather belatedly - in an attempt to reintroduce professional

Over the last decade, with the aid of scientific and technological advances, there has
been increasing disquiet about the systemic effects of long-term exposure to the mercury
which is released from amalgams and retained in the body. Signs and symptoms arising from
long-term low-level exposure to mercury are now called chronic mercury toxicity. Results
of recent research have led governments in Sweden, Germany and Austria to legislate to
restrict the use of amalgam because of the increasing amount of evidence indicating the
toxic effects of this material.
It is an undisputed fact that mercury is a very poisonous substance and it is acknowledged
as being the most toxic of the heavy metals. Mercury is a strong protoplasmic poison that
penetrates all living cells of the human body and a powerful biological poison with no
necessary biological function2. Being a nonpolar lipid-soluble entity it is rapidly
absorbed through the lungs, skin and mucous membranes. The basis of mercury’s
toxicity is its affinity for sulphur. It binds to sulphydryl groups and so inactivates
cell enzymes, thereby interrupting cell metabolism and function. Whether and at what level
mercury is poisonous depends on each person’s biological sensitivity and its effect
may show in different organs3. |

There are two points of view when it comes to supplements. One is that vitamin
parts can be synthesized, in high concentrates (high potency). This is the principle
followed by most supplement manufacturers, the majority of which are pharmaceutical
companies. These vitamins are termed “synthetic”. (Though they can be labeled
“natural” even if they come from sugar or coal tar).
The other viewpoint is that vitamins and mineral elements are so complex, and have
so many parts that are dependent upon each other, that when separated they no longer can
produce a normal nutritional effect on the body. According to this theory, an overdose of
any one vitamin, as it occurs with separated out or synthetic vitamins, can be hazardous
to the body. Complete vitamins, with all of their parts and necessary cofactors are often
termed “whole food vitamins”, since they are derived entirely from whole foods. |

Talking dirty -Complacency about personal hygiene is making us ill
"Life is a dirty word. No matter how you live yours, you are exposed
to filth daily. According to microbiologists, your home is riddled
with dangerous bugs, as is your workplace.
Once you start digging for dirt, it’s hard to stop. Here are some
findings from the most recent research. Swimming pools harbour
faecal and urine contaminants; take a dip and you might pick up the
Citrobacter freundii bacteria, an agent of infections such as
pneumonia. The hot tub is another bubbling broth of bacteria, and
has been linked to deaths from Legionnaire’s disease and pneumonia.
Gyms are dripping with other people’s stale sweat and bacteria:
Staphylococcus epidermis, which causes skin infections,
streptococcal infections, and candida, a yeast infection, to name
but a few. Germs, we are told, loiter in the most unlikely places;
the herpes virus and those listed above can be a risk if the sweat
of an infected person gets on to light switches, door handles,
escalator handrails and any other frequently touched surfaces. Cold
and flu viruses are also easily transmitted through touch. Some
germs, such as enterococcus, survive for just 40 minutes, but most
can linger menacingly for anything from 24 hours (Staphylococcus
aureus, salmonella) to two to three weeks (rotavirus, hepatitis A
and clostridium).
Charles Gerba, a professor of environmental sciences at the University of
Arizona and an expert in the study of nasty bacteria that lurk in
our lifestyles, found, for instance, that one of the most
germ-ridden items in public spaces is the ground-floor button on a
lift. But germs are not just spread by obvious means such as touch.
They are insidious, creeping into every nook and cranny of our daily
existence. Another of Gerba’s findings revealed how 30 per cent of
women’s handbags contain 100 million particles of faecal matter per
square inch on their surface, probably from being placed on the
floors of public toilets
...A study conducted by the University of Arizona found that the
most common microorganisms associated with outbreaks stemming from
public toilets included shigella, salmonella, norovirus and
hepatitis A virus. Bacteria and viruses are ejected and dispersed
into the air when a toilet is flushed; these germ-filled droplets
land on all surfaces, contaminating the environment.
Researchers found that 64 per cent of the time the floor in front of the
toilet in a public convenience was contaminated with faecal
bacteria. For sinks the figure was 61 per cent of the time; for the
top of the toilet, 20 per cent; and for the toilet handle 6 per
cent.
Women’s toilets were significantly more contaminated than men’s, with the
middle cubicle usually the most contaminated of all. Airport toilets
were the germiest of all. " |
Worms infect more poor Americans than thought -Reuters
"Roundworms may infect close to a quarter of inner city black
children, tapeworms are the leading cause of seizures among U.S.
Hispanics and other parasitic diseases associated with poor
countries are also affecting Americans, a U.S. expert said on
Tuesday....a recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, presented in November, found that almost 14 percent of
the U.S. population is infected with Toxocara roundworms...Urban
playgrounds in the United States have recently been shown to be a
particularly rich source of Toxocara eggs and inner-city children
are at high risk of acquiring the infection," Hotez wrote, adding
that this might be partly behind the rise in asthma cases in the

Egypt Mummy Shows Taste for Pork
Ancient Egyptians — unlike their Muslim
modern descendents — had a taste for pork, according to a mummy
autopsy.
In a study to be published in the coming months in the
American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Fabrizio
Bruschi, a pathologist from Italy's Pisa University, and
colleagues report the discovery of the
oldest known case of cysticercosis — a pig-related disease
— in a mummy from the late Ptolemaic period (II-I century B.C.).
Often contracted from undercooked pork
, cysticercosis is an infection caused by the pork tapeworm
Taenia solium.

the toilets of a Jewish household in Jerusalem were examined and
no parasites or infectious agents were found. A similar study
done regarding Egyptians
revealed eggs from Schistosoma, Trichinella, wire worm and
tapeworms, all found in pork. These organisms can cause
significant chronic diseases. Of course, this is only
one finding but perhaps noteworthy"

U.S. Leads in
Sexually Transmitted Disease Rate
Rates of early death and disability that can be attributed to sexual behavior are
three times higher in the United States than other so-called developed nations, a new
study finds.
This finding precludes the AIDS epidemic in many African countries.
American men still die more often as a result of having a sexually transmitted
disease, researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said, but
more cases are reported in American women. The findings were published in the Jan. 27
issue of the British journal Sexually Transmitted Infections. |

"Americans, and especially women, are three times more likely to suffer premature

adverse health conditions and 29,745 deaths in the United States in 1998 were related to

"The research showed the sexual behavior attributable health burden is about three

Simian
Virus 40 Found In Human Lymphoma Samples
"Evidence of simian virus 40 (SV40) infection found in 42 percent of
non-Hodgkin lymphoma samples could shed new light on the genesis of these
blood cancers that have become more common over the past 30 years, said Baylor
College of Medicine scientists in a report in the March 9 issue of The Lancet, a British
scientific journal. About 55,000 new cases of the disease are diagnosed annually.
...SV40 usually infects rhesus monkeys. However, in the 1950s
and early 1960s, some batches of polio vaccine became accidentally infected with the
virus. The vaccine was then given to millions of people worldwide. Because some patients
with SV40-positive tumors were born after 1963 and would not have been exposed to the
contaminated vaccine, it appears that SV40 continues to
spread among humans in ways that are not yet clear. [Hint:

evidence of SV40 infection has also been found in human
brain tumors, tumors of the lining of the chest and abdomen (mesothelioma), and

Hygiene vigilance critical to safety as food-borne illnesses

Although food-borne diseases are a menace to the entire restaurant
industry, operators simply are not taking the stern measures
required to stamp out the threat. They are too confident that "it
can't happen here." But it can and does as has been demonstrated
numerous times with devastating results
...In a recent incident personally observed at a restaurant, a
waitress carrying a tray of food keeps sneezing. But she is not the
least bit fazed and brings the food to the table without apologizing
and without washing. She makes no effort to replace the food. Nor
does anything happen when we point out the matter as an
embarrassment and hazard to the restaurant. Finally, after 10
minutes and at the prodding of the manager, she does wash her hands.
Operators maintain that this sort of thing is not likely to happen
because the law says, and the manager enforces it, that employees
must carefully wash with soap and water before starting work, at
each visit to the restroom, and on occasions such as when sneezing
while carrying food. Hands must also be washed after touching any
part of the hair or body, touching a soiled surface or handling raw
foods. Hair nets are also supposed to be worn in the kitchen. But
employees are often lax about these procedures, and management is
guilty of ignoring infractions.
...The problem may be getting worse as disease-causing microbes
are spread by unwashed hands. And at least eight harmful
microorganisms are popping up more frequently. One solution being
tried by some restaurants is to put hand sanitizers at various work
stations to ensure that workers will be clean at all times. |

a person's lifetime, a National Academy of Sciences panel concluded. It rejected

radiation exposure) below which cancers are not induced," the scientists said.
While at low doses "the number of radiation-induced cancers will be small ...

the newspaper said, citing disclosures in medical journals and other public records. The
10 members voted 9 to 1 to keep the Pfizer drug Bextra on the market, and 9 to 1 to allow

market, the Times said. Had those members not voted, the newspaper reported, the two drugs
